Urvashi Rautela Dazzles in 24K Gold Manipuri Potloi at Global Fashion Festival 2024

Urvashi Rautela made history as the first Bollywood celebrity to serve as a fashion showstopper at the Global Fashion Festival 2024. She wowed audiences by donning a stunning 24K real gold Manipuri Potloi, a traditional bridal attire that exudes elegance and cultural significance. Designed by the renowned Robert Naorem, this exquisite piece showcases the rich heritage and artistry of the Meitei community. The potloi, an iconic garment traditionally worn by Manipuri brides, beautifully represents the vibrant traditions and craftsmanship of the region.

The Potloi which is a drum-shaped skirt, made of thick fibre and bamboo on top covered with satin, makes the Manipuri bridal dresses different from others. The outfit features threadwork and glittering sequins with a vahan with all the pieces of mirrors studded into it. Motifs run into days of painstaking work to complete the detail at the hem of the skirt. It is secured with a ceremonial belt and has a flowing veil that falls over the body. The costume is completed with a half-sleeved blouse, ornamental necklaces, and an elaborate three-tiered headgear called the Kokgee Leiteng.

The potloi originated during the reign of Meidingu Bhagyachandra Maharaj (1763–1798), when it was introduced as a costume for the classical Ras-Leela dance. Over the years, it evolved into a traditional wedding attire for Meitei brides. The art of making potlois has been handed down through generations, learned within families rather than through formal education. Crafting a potloi is a labor-intensive process that often involves multiple artisans, making it a true community effort.
