Saadgi Nagpal is a Jaipur-based designer brand known for its luxurious, versatile creations that celebrate Indian craftsmanship while striving for a sustainable future. In an interview with Mohi Fashion, founder Saadgi Nagpal discusses the brand’s journey and emphasizes the significance of integrating traditional Indian crafts into their designs.
Mohi: When did you start the brand and a glimpse into the early days of the brand ?
Saadgi Nagpal: We launched the brand in November 2023, and from the start, we were clear about our creative direction. We knew exactly how we wanted to blend contemporary styles with traditional fashion. In those early days, we relied heavily on feedback and insights from those closest to us. That helped shape the brand into what it is today—something more wearable and versatile, perfect for both small gatherings and grand occasions.
Mohi: Any thoughts or insights you would like to share about your journey of the brand?
Saadgi Nagpal: During my final year of college, the pandemic hit so we had no resources, no training sessions with major brands, and no clear direction. The only thing that kept me going was the sheer will to create something, which led me to launch a small Indian casual wear brand. But deep down, I knew it wasn’t my true passion. The aspects of fashion that initially drew me in, the details and the embellishments were missing. That realization set me on the path to creating Saadgi Nagpal. I named it after myself because it’s a reflection of who I am, my mind, my vision, and my creative spirit.
Mohi: How did you lock down your niche ?
Saadgi Nagpal: I realized my niche when I found myself drawn to intricate embellishments, especially those with a 3D effect. I wanted to create designs that not only stand out but also stay true to the natural elements they’re inspired by. That’s why I chose to focus on 3D embroidery, allowing the design to have depth while preserving the essence of the natural forms I draw from.
Mohi: How do you select the colors and fabrics for each collection? Are there specific influences that guide your choices?
Saadgi Nagpal: Our color palette is deeply inspired by nature, with seasonal trends also playing a significant role in shaping our designs. However, our primary focus is on inclusivity. We carefully select shades that complement a wide range of skin tones, ensuring our garments are flattering and accessible to everyone.
Mohi: Can you share your process for creating a new collection, from concept to production? ( in brief )
Saadgi Nagpal: When I'm starting with a new collection, I draw inspiration from nature, whether it's something I see in my daily surroundings or during my travels. I focus on specific elements that stand out, like a unique flower or a scenic landscape, and then build around those. I pull references from those details and incorporate them into my designs, creating pieces that are deeply connected to the natural world, especially with floral and landscape motifs.
Mohi: Is there a particular collection of yours that holds special significance for you?
Saadgi Nagpal: Since every collection is an expression of my thoughts, each garment carries its own special meaning for me. It’s hard to choose just one because every piece reflects a part of my journey and creativity.
Mohi: Is there a designer who inspires you in the Indian or the global fashion space ?
Saadgi Nagpal: In both the Indian and global fashion space, Sabyasachi Mukherji has always been a major inspiration for me. He’s created a space where almost every Indian dreams of wearing his designs, and now he’s making headlines internationally as well. His attention to detail, from silhouettes to jewelry, and his ability to turn a label into a full-fledged brand is something I admire deeply.
His journey, starting with clothing and now branching into jewelry, accessories, and major collaborations aligns with my own aspirations for the future.
Mohi: Advice to Budding Designers ?
Saadgi Nagpal: As my husband often reminds me, success doesn’t arrive when you expect it. It will test your patience, challenge your motivation, and even push you to the brink of giving up. But when it finally does come, it’ll be worth it, it’ll be the sweetest reward. So my advice to the budding designers is to remember the same and never give up on your dreams!
Mohi: How do you envision the future of Saadgi Nagpal in the global fashion landscape?
Saadgi Nagpal: I see Saadgi Nagpal evolving from a label to a full-fledged brand. My goal is to expand its reach and presence, establishing it as a name that resonates on a global scale, while staying true to its essence and my creative vision.
